Located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, Algoma University is a public university. Algoma University is a post-secondary university that specializes in degree programs in the liberal arts, sciences, management, and professional fields and has a particular emphasis on serving the needs of Northern Ontario.
Algoma University, which is situated on the former grounds of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School, has a unique goal to promote and facilitate intercultural learning among Aboriginal communities and other communities. Timmins and Brampton, both in Ontario, have access to satellite programming from Algoma U.
The idea of separating Algoma from Laurentian University was initially floated in 1994. The school was originally going to be renamed “Shingwauk University,” but the MTCU ultimately decided against it.
The Ontario government declared on May 31, 2007, that it would submit legislation to establish Algoma University College as a totally independent university. On June 18, 2008, David Onley, the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, granted royal assent to the Algoma University Act after it had been passed by the government.
On July 13, 2009, Algoma University awarded its first degrees as an independent institution of higher learning to 60 students.
In order to honor the academic accomplishments of its graduates, Algoma University presented its first in-person convocation ceremony since 2019. Algoma University President Mario Turco presented degrees to 266 applicants and handed out 276 certificates at the ceremony, which was held at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion on the waterfront in Sault.
Chief Lyle Sayers, who served as the chair of the Shingwauk Education Trust (SET) and the Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gaming, was also awarded an honorary doctor of letters degree by the university (SKG).
Additional awards given to the winners for outstanding accomplishments also served as a highlight of the program.
Additionally, the campus of Algoma University is located in the center of Brampton’s historic downtown. The downtown, which has more than 1500 companies and services, is only a few steps away and provides access to local and regional transportation. Enjoy amazing restaurants, shops, arts, entertainment, parks, and culture.
